Gratitude Journal

Imagine how it would feel starting every day in a positive mood, energised, ready to take on the world. Instead of mentally replaying all your life’s problems over and over in your head, you chose to take control of your mind and focus on the good.

Day by day you appreciate life more and find yourself feeling happier. Stop rolling your eyes. It is not that crazy of a concept. Today, I will show you how to use a gratitude journal.

For me, it is about being mindful and intentional.

I set a time of day, either first thing in the morning and in the evening as I wind down, depends on the week and full schedule.

Write down 3 or more things that you are grateful for today.

I try to be more specifc that ‘I’m grateful for food’ and write ‘I’m grateful for the family that worked hard together to create a colourful and delicious meal as a team’. Sometimes I just write food though, as I might be super tired!

I look back through photos to remind me all the things I’ve documented through the day. I reflect on my feelings, relationships and learning opportunities.

Practice – it takes time to get in a rhythm. Give it a go! No one is going to mark you on this!

You can use a physical journal, online diary( like this one), special notebook or specific gratitude journal. My personal favourite is one from Kylie King. I’m not an affiliate, I just love her book and love supporting a local business! You can grab your copy here.

  1. I’ve been doing this for a few months myself. My gratitude journal is also my planner and has taken the focus off a literally never ending To Do List. Each day I write down 3+ things I’m grateful for, my predominant feelings, what I achieved, happy moments, and I summarise the day with a quote. I then write my list of jobs for the next day. We also express thanks at the dinner table each evening for one thing on our plate and one thing from our day. We write the best things from the week down each Friday and put them in a jar which we open and share in New Years Eve. This gratitude stuff really works.
